A Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) notice filed in California confirms the company’s plans to lay off 81 employees at its Northridge facility. MedTech Dive reported the news first.
The notice states that Medtronic notified the state of the planned workforce reduction on Feb. 5, 2026. It plans for the layoffs to go into effect on April 7, 2026.
According to the MedTech Dive report, the restructuring of operations affects engineering, IT, marketing and technician roles. As of last year, the Diabetes business had a team of more than 8,000 global employees, meaning the layoffs affect around 1% of the unit’s global workforce.
The layoffs come as Medtronic looks to separate the Diabetes business into a publicly traded company called MiniMed.
A Medtronic spokesperson shared the following statement with Drug Delivery Business News:
“As we prepare for Diabetes to operate as a standalone, public company, we need to ensure the right structure, capabilities, and scale for the business to succeed. This includes sharpening focus, aligning resources to the most critical priorities, and in some cases, bringing in new skills and expertise. While difficult, these decisions ensure we’re setting this business up for long-term success.”
MiniMed is currently working toward completing an IPO, for which it filed at the end of 2025, and bringing new insulin pump technology to the market. Medtronic said earlier this week that it submitted the next-generation MiniMed Flex to the FDA for approval.
The medtech giant announced in May 2025 that it planned to separate the Diabetes unit into a standalone, publicly traded company. The move sought to create “a more focused Medtronic” with a more simplified portfolio in high-margin growth markets. At the same time, it creates an independent, scaled leader in diabetes. Over the last nine months, Medtronic continues to state that the process — which it expected to complete within 18 months — is proceeding as planned. It expects to get the IPO-driven separation done by the end of the calendar year.
