Merz North America said today that its Describe PFD patch was cleared by the FDA for all commonly-used lasers.
The single-use, perfluorodecalin-infused patch is used during laser-assisted tattoo removal to allow for multiple passes in a single treatment session.
Merz’s dual-layer patch was first cleared by the FDA in April 2015 for use with the 755 nm QS Alexandrite laser, which removes blue or black tattoos. The latest clearance indicates that the patch can be used to remove tattoos across a spectrum of colors, the company reported, and it extends the product’s shelf life from two years to three years.
“Physicians and our patients wanted to be able to use Describe with a variety of lasers on tattoos of all colors, and a recent study shows that this is now possible,” lead author Dr. Jeremy Brauer said in prepared remarks. “With this clearance extension we can use the patch as an accessory with commonly used lasers and wavelengths for tattoo removal.”
“Tattoo removal is the third fastest growing non-surgical cosmetic procedure, but historically the treatment has taken a year or more to be completed,” CEO Bob Rhatigan added. “The Patch offers physicians and their patients a faster, safer and more effective option than without the patch alone. Innovations, like Describe, exemplify our ongoing commitment to help patients live better, feel better and look better.”
