Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre glucose monitoring app launches in Europe

February 7, 2018 By Sarah Faulkner

AbbottAbbott (NYSE:ABT) said today that it launched an app for its FreeStyle Libre glucose monitoring system in Europe that can be used with both iPhone and Android smartphones.

The mobile app is designed to give people with diabetes direct access to their glucose data on their smartphones. Without the app, FreeStyle Libre users have to carry a separate, handheld device to scan the system’s sensor for a glucose reading.

The FreeStyle LibreLink app was previously only available for Android users, but it is now compatible with iPhones, Abbott said.

The app captures and reports real-time glucose levels, an eight-hour glucose history and gives users the opportunity to track food, insulin use and physical activity.

“We’re committed to bringing life-changing technology and tools to liberate people from the many hassles of diabetes management,” Jared Watkin, SVP of Abbott’s diabetes care business, said in prepared remarks.

“The FreeStyle LibreLink app is a digital health tool that integrates glucose data directly on a smartphone so everything is all in one place. This is another step forward in making glucose monitoring seamlessly fit into a patient’s daily lifestyle – helping them live a fuller, healthier life.”

People with diabetes using the FreeStyle LibreLink app can also share their glucose data with doctors and caregivers using LibreView, Abbott’s cloud-based diabetes management system, and LibreLinkUp, an app that allows caregivers to remotely monitor glucose readings.

Abbott’s FreeStyle LibreLink app is available in 12 European countries, including France, Germany, Ireland, Spain and the U.K.
