Dexcom (Nasdaq:DXCM) announced today that its G7 continuous glucose monitor (CGM) now connects directly to the Apple Watch in the U.S.
San Diego-based Dexcom first announced the addition of this capability in March. The official launch makes G7 the first and only CGM available with a direct-to-Apple-Watch feature. It offers users the freedom and convenience of real-time glucose readings even without an iPhone readily available.
In addition to the U.S., Dexcom says it made the feature available in the UK and Ireland. It expects launches in additional markets to come later this month.
G7 uses its own dedicated Bluetooth connection to send glucose information and personalized alerts directly to an Apple Watch. This allows users to go for a run or enjoy social activities while feeling confident leaving their iPhone behind. G7 can now display glucose readings on multiple devices simultaneously and independently. Those include a smartphone, smart watch, receiver or connected automated insulin delivery system.
Additionally, users can track health metrics that can impact glucose using Apple’s own health features on the watch. All data goes to the Health app and users can view it alongside their G7 data, all in one place.
“At Dexcom, our users are at the heart of everything we do. Direct to Apple Watch has been one of our most requested features, and we’re thrilled to roll it out to Dexcom G7 users in the U.S. and around the world,” said Jake Leach, executive vice president and chief operating officer at Dexcom. “We’ve long believed that people with diabetes should be able to view their CGM data where and how they choose. Direct to Apple Watch is a testament to that, allowing people with diabetes flexibility and choice in how they manage their health.”
