
Helsinki, Finland-based GlucoModicum published its findings in Biosensors and Bioelectronics. The company said it highlights key features of the development of ultra-sensitive electrochemical glucose biosensors. Its work reflects efforts in engineering and system-level design, forming the basis of the company’s product development, including its Sofio needle-free continuous glucose monitor (CGM).
The company said its publication demonstrates how precise control of sensing mechanisms enables consistent, interpretable signals. This is a requirement for accurate glucose monitoring in real-world settings. GlucoModicum says this technical foundation supports scalable manufacturing and efficient product refinement as it moves its technology toward market readiness.
“This publication demonstrates our ability to translate complex physics and electrochemistry into a practical glucose monitoring solution. The principles outlined are directly embedded in Sofio’s development,” said Alejandro García Pérez, chief technology officer at GlucoModicum.
Last month, the company unveiled Sofio, labeling it the world’s first needle-free CGM based on magneto-hydrodynamics (MHD).
MHD technology draws micro-samples of interstitial fluid through the skin. It measures glucose with established electrochemical sensor technology. The single-day sensor system delivers a periodic, personalized monitoring alternative to standard continuous glucose monitor (CGM) devices.
Helsinki, Finland-based GlucoModicum’s method, like existing CGMs from Abbott and Dexcom, measures glucose through established glucose oxidase enzyme chemistry. However, the company aims to offer an option for people who don’t require 24/7 monitoring.
Clinical study data previously demonstrated accuracy in line with regulatory expectations for interstitial glucose monitoring. Earlier this year, the company reported a mean absolute relative difference (MARD, a measure of CGM accuracy) of 11.5%. This approaches the industry benchmark of 10% set by needle-based CGM, the company says.
GlucoModicum said it engineered Sofio for mass manufacturability and established production partnerships for the device. It plans to progress through European regulatory pathways soon, with further updates — including related to its U.S. and FDA strategy — set to come this year.
