Insulet (Nasdaq:PODD) today revealed plans for its innovation pipeline, which includes the next-generation Omnipod 6 system.

At the company’s Investor Day event, held at its Acton, Massachusetts headquarters, President and CEO Ashley McEvoy laid out the company’s innovation roadmap. That includes updates to the current-generation Omnipod 5 platform, the new Omnipod 6 and a new, fully closed-loop pump for the type 2 diabetes population.

“Each generation of our technology has marked a true breakthrough in making life with diabetes a little more normal and bringing Omnipod to even more people around the world,” McEvoy said during the Investor Day event. “What’s coming next delivers on that same high bar, but we’re moving a little faster now.”

McEvoy said the company plans to add smarter automation, expanded continuous glucose monitor (CGM) connectivity and a new data platform called Discover to the Omnipod 5 platform in 2026. Then, in 2027, Insulet plans to launch Omnipod 6, building on the success of Omnipod 5. To close out its three-year roadmap, the company plans to introduce its first fully closed-loop insulin pump system for type 2 diabetes.

COO Eric Benjamin said the development for Omnipod 6 “is progressing quickly,” as the company advances its several innovations.

“With Omnipod 5 enhancements, Omnipod 6 and a fully closed-loop pump for type 2 diabetes, we expect to extend our leadership with the aim of improving outcomes, breaking down barriers to adoption and unlocking new segments of our total addressable market,” Benjamin said.

More on the plans for Omnipod 6

McEvoy said Omnipod 6 represents the next-generation hybrid closed-loop automated insulin delivery (AID) option for both type 1 and type 2 diabetes. It features an improved, adaptive algorithm that makes the pod even easier to use, she said.

“We anticipate that Omnipod 6 will significantly expand our market, both in type one as well as type two,” said McEvoy.

Benjamin said Omnipod 6 delivers better, more personalized clinical outcomes, plus ease of use and connectivity. It all comes on a foundation for faster innovation, he said.

The next-generation system features a new algorithm that learns from users’ unique insulin requirements. It aims to deliver better performance and outcomes, he said, especially for those who bolus less. Other features include improved connectivity for reliability and wear flexibility, plus a new app and controller experience.

Finally, Insulet plans for Omnipod 6 to work across all CGM systems and features, simplifying logistics, Benjamin said. Its design also allows the company to push new innovations, like future CGM integrations, directly to systems already in the field. This eliminates manufacturing and channel stocking, allowing Insulet to bring technology to customers as quickly as 6-9 months faster.

The company has fully enrolled STRIVE, the pivotal study for its next-generation algorithm. Insulet SVP and Chief Medical Officer, Dr. Trang Ly, said the company plans to share STRIVE outcomes at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions in 2026.

“We know what it takes to build the best algorithms for optimal performance, and with that, we’re generating the evidence we need to unlock innovation and accelerate adoption right now,” Ly said.

Benjamin said Insulet expects results to pave the way for a 2026 FDA filing and a 2027 launch. The company targets both type 1 and type 2 diabetes with Omnipod 6.

“Omnipod 6 not only strengthens our competitive position, it further simplifies the Omnipod experience, thereby expanding the AID market and accelerating the adoption of advanced technology,” Benjamin said.

Insulet also outlines plans for a fully closed-loop system for type 2 diabetes

The next step in Insulet’s innovation roadmap comes in 2028, with the planned launch of a new, fully closed-loop system.

“Our fully closed loop marks a step change in simplicity and ease of use with a fully automated system that is ready to use out of the box,” McEvoy said. “This technology will greatly expand our reach with both the endocrinology community and the primary care physician community, and unlock that much larger share of the $12 billion type 2 market.”

Benjamin called the fully closed-loop pump “the solution to unlock dramatic category expansion in type 2.”

“Not just any fully closed-loop system can do it,” he said.

Insulet expects its new offering to make AID accessible to “virtually everyone,” he said. Its algorithm adjusts intelligently in real-time with no need for meal announcements, carb counting or manual input. The company wants to enable customers to pick up a prescription or start with a sample kit in-office, then enjoy the benefits of automated insulin from the comfort of their own home, on their own schedule. That improves the experience and reduces the commercial investment for the company, Benjamin said.

Ultimately, it could enable access to AID for “millions of people who have never considered AID as a treatment option.”

“We’re moving at pace to make fully closed-loop for type 2 a reality,” Benjamin said. “It’ll reduce the burden of managing type 2 diabetes and give patients and providers a therapy that’s effective, empowering and fits in their lives with busy practices.”

Insulet plans to target the type 2 bolus market, then target type 2 basal over time. It completed enrollment for EVOLUTION-2, a safety and feasibility study. Next, it plans to start a pivotal study in 2026, followed by a 2027 regulatory submission and 2028 launch.

Ly also said Insulet intends to share study results at ATTD in March.

“We’re about to start EVOLUTION-3 shortly, and expect to commence our pivotal trial in 2026,” Ly said. “These studies will validate safety and efficacy for our next growth phase, shape clinical guidelines and inform payer policies. We can’t wait for this innovation to reach patients.”

Nearer-term innovations on the way as well, along with innovations beyond the next three years

While 2027 and 2028 could bring exciting innovations for Insulet, the company also has high expectations for next year.

Insulet plans to roll out a lower target and extend Omnipod 5’s automation to enhance time in range and usability. By the first half of next year, the company expects the current-generation pump to connect with “all of the major CGMs,” including Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, McEvoy noted.

Also in 2026, the company plans to launch Discover, a new platform for providing weekly insights to healthcare professionals and users. Discover uses machine learning to identify trends, optimize care and streamline the process of starting Omnipod therapy.

“These enhancements make OmniPod 5 smarter, more available, and make the entire diabetes management experience more connected, more human, more effective,” Benjamin said.

He also noted that the company aims to submit Omnipod 5 for CE mark to cover type 2 diabetes in Europe, further expanding that market opportunity. Then, beyond the three-year plan, Benjamin said the company has eyes on even more new technologies.

“We continue solving the toughest problems to push the boundaries of what’s possible in diabetes management by investing in next-generation platforms,” he said.

During the coming years, the company plans to invest in fully closed-loop technology for type 1 diabetes as well, leveraging its learnings from its type 2 program. Benjamin said the company expects an “iterative” road to fully closed-loop, with significant improvements delivered over time.

Insulet also has work underway on a new hardware platform for its pods, looking to invest in the coming years and launch beyond 2028. It targets areas of unmet need and interest for providers and users, including higher insulin capacity, form factor improvements and longer wear.

“As always, we’ll approach these challenges with empathy and ingenuity, always relentlessly seeking a better way,” Benjamin said.

Executives offer takes on growth and continuing to gain market share

McEvoy has stressed the company’s capabilities beyond just the technology, including supply chain, direct-to-consumer (DTC) efforts and more.

“Powerful brands in this space understand the daily habits and practices and rituals, and they understand how to deliver superior performance that people can count on because of this unique positioning we hold in the marketplace,” McEvoy said. “We need to ensure that we’re masterful in all of these areas, in innovation, in building evidence and working closely with clinicians on how to advance the standard of care.”

Beyond the pipeline and roadmap updates, Insulet SVP and Chief Growth Officer Manoj Raghunandanan and SVP and U.S. GM Carolyn Sleeth delivered insights into how the company views its position in the market and where it’s headed.

Raghunandanan said the company, despite its leadership position, still views AID as a very under-penetrated market.

“It’s our responsibility as the leader in the category to grow that penetration,” Raghunandanan said. “We have to grow that penetration, and we will grow that penetration, and we’ll do it in a category-redefining way.”

“My aspiration is for us to be an incredibly efficient machine when it comes to DTC, because the more personalized we can be, the better chance we have of making an impact.”

Sleeth said the company continues to invest in initiatives that drive growth, including direct-to-consumer marketing, onboarding and support systems, virtual training, AI capabilities and more.

“We are uniquely positioned to capture the opportunity,” Sleeth said. “Our aspiration is clear: Make AID the standard of care in practice across the full type 1 population, and make Omnipod the standard of care for type 2.”

CFO Flavia Pease also noted that, to support growth, the company plans to bring a new manufacturing plant in Costa Rica online in 2029. The company continues to invest in R&D and manufacturing capabilities, including automation, to advance its offerings, Pease said.

“We will continue to advance automation, ensuring that every pod we make meets our high standards of safety, performance and reliability,” Pease said.

Is competition on the horizon?

While Omnipod leads the patch pump market, this space also has expected entries from Medtronic, Tandem Diabetes Care and Beta Bionics. Some of those could even be on the horizon within the next year. Executives at Insulet were recently asked about this on the company’s latest quarterly earnings call earlier this month.

During a Q&A session at the Investor Day, Benjamin said the company has confidence in its own standing within the market when evaluating the competitive landscape.

“We set the bar for what people expect from a pod-based automated insulin delivery system,” Benjamin said. “It’s wearable, tubless, waterproof, has automatic cannula insertion, it’s fully disposable… It’s easy to use, it fits in their life and delivers great clinical outcomes. That’s the bar we set in the market.

“For folks who are interested in trying to bring another technology to the market, we are the market leader. It’s the bar we set and in 2026 we’re going to raise that bar by making Omnipod 5 even better. … Then, we take that bar up in 2027 with the launch of Omnipod 6.”

McEvoy echoed Benjamin, outlining the pay-as-you-go model “pioneered” by Insulet, along with proven clinical and economic value. She said that, combined with the power of the company’s brand, builds a base for Insulet to compete.

“With the power of the brand, people trust us and they rely on us, given our repeatable quality,” McEvoy said. “That has really served to be the competitive moat as we go forward.”
