Sequel Med Tech, Diabeloop to integrate automated insulin delivery algorithm into twiist pump

Sequel Med Tech and Diabeloop today announced a collaboration to integrate a new algorithm into the twiist automated insulin pump.

The partnership aims to bring DBLG2, Diabeloop’s newest automated insulin delivery (AID) algorithm, to twiist. DBLG2 picked up FDA clearance last month. Sequel becomes the latest pump maker to adopt the algorithm, with ViCentra planning to roll out its next-generation Kaleido pump with DBLG2. It would mark the first integration of the Diabeloop algorithm into a commercial insulin pump in the U.S. market.

DBLG 1 requires users to only enter body weight and total daily insulin dose before adapting to the user’s needs. Its self-learning module refines parameters over time based on glucose trends and insulin delivery history. This enables responses to the diversity of type 1 diabetes physiologies, specific medical conditions and personal preferences. Users can also choose not to declare meals.

Sequel designed its twiist pump — currently powered by the Loop algorithm developed by Tidepool — to directly measure the volume of insulin delivered with every microdose. It offers the capability and flexibility to address each patient’s individual dosing needs. Sequel’s system utilizes sound waves that measure each pulse of insulin. This enables precision and helps understand exactly how much insulin the patient receives in a dose.

The system features iiSure technology, which includes four checkpoints to provide accurate delivery and alert users to blockages quickly. Cleared for ages six and up with type 1 diabetes, it offers a personalized way to manage the condition. Sequel began its rollout for the AID system in 2025.

Through the collaboration, Sequel and Diabeloop hope to move twiist closer to a fully closed-loop solution. They plan to make the integrated offering available in the U.S. market initially, potentially followed by global expansion later.

The companies expect product readiness by the end of 2026 and a U.S. launch in 2027.

Commentary from Diabeloop and Sequel officials

François Miceli, CEO of Diabeloop, commented:

“We are thrilled to have this agreement with Sequel Med Tech for their new generation of Automated Insulin Delivery systems built around the twiist™ insulin delivery system. This partnership represents a significant step forward, as it will provide the U.S. diabetes community with access to our technology for the first time.

“Together with Sequel, we are determined to develop an AID system that meaningfully simplifies diabetes management without compromising clinical outcomes. This collaboration further confirms our position as a leading AID algorithm partner for pump manufacturers seeking to address both the U.S. and European markets. It is also our fifth official insulin pump integration, following Roche, ViCentra, Terumo, and SOOIL.”

Alan Lotvin, Sequel CEO, said:

“We recognize type 1 diabetes is not one size fits all, and diabetes technology shouldn’t be either. That’s why twiist is committed to give people as much choice as possible. twiist will be the only AID system with multiple algorithm options, so people can personalize their care as they desire. The twiist AID system empowers people to get the insulin they need, when they need it, so they can reach their goals while living with greater freedom and more flexibility.”
