This marks the latest pairing of automated insulin delivery (AID) and continuous glucose monitor (CGM) technologies between the companies. They announced the integration of FreeStyle Libre 2 Plus CGM into the t:slim X2 insulin pump in January 2024. Just last week, the companies announced the future pairing of Tandem systems with Abbott’s under-development dual glucose-ketone sensor.
San Diego-based Tandem said it has already initiated an early access program for integration in the U.S.. It plans to scale availability in the second half of 2025.
“Diabetes management is not one-size-fits-all, and it is critical for people living with diabetes to be able to personalize their AID systems to fit their unique healthcare and lifestyle needs,” said Dr. Jordan Pinsker, chief medical officer of Tandem Diabetes Care. “The American Diabetes Association recommends AID systems as the preferred insulin delivery method in people with type 1 and other types of insulin-deficient diabetes, and this integration with Abbott’s latest generation sensor allows even more CGM users to access the life-changing benefits of our Control-IQ+ technology.”
More about the newly paired Tandem and Abbott technologies
Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus is the company’s latest-generation CGM designed for insulin pump integration. Its readings every minute can help insulin pumps adjust to users’ needs. Beta Bionics became the first pump maker to pair with the technology last fall.
The CGM offers an extended 15-day wear time and sends its readings directly to the pump. Users can also view data on the Tandem t:slim mobile app to give them multiple convenient ways to access glucose trends.
t:slim X2, meanwhile, is powered by Control-IQ+ technology. Tandem designed the advanced hybrid closed-loop automated insulin delivery feature to predict and help prevent high and low blood sugar. Control-IQ leads to improved time in range throughout the day and night. Tandem unveiled the next-generation algorithm earlier this year.
The pump also features a unique AutoBolus feature that calculates and delivers a correction bolus to help with missed meal boluses. Tandem says it’s the only system with this feature, while it offers easy starts and personalization with the new integration.
“This is an exciting first step in our strategy to connect Tandem’s portfolio of insulin pumps to Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus sensors worldwide,” said John Sheridan, president and chief executive officer of Tandem Diabetes Care. “We look forward to expanding access to our t:slim X2 users outside of the U.S. beginning later this year.”
