Trinseo launches polymer solutions for drug delivery devices

July 11, 2017 By Sarah Faulkner

TrinseoTrinseo (NYSE:TSE) said today that its consumer essential markets division now offers specialty engineered polymer solutions for medical device and pharmaceutical manufacturers to use in the production of drug delivery devices.

The combination devices that can leverage Trinseo materials include auto-injectors, asthma inhalers, insulin pens, wearable devices and prefilled syringes, according to the Berwyn, Penn.-based company.

Trinseo produces acrylonitrile butadiene styrene to be used for housings, polycarbonate for windows and needle shield caps and polystyrene for secondary packaging.

The materials are sold under the brand-names Calibre Polycarbonate Resins, Calibre Megarad Polycarbonate Resins, Emerge Advanced Resins, Styron Polystyrene Resins and Magnum Abs Resins.

Trinseo touted its materials as having high impact resistance, high stiffness and low residual monomer and oligomer levels.

The company has experience developing materials for the medical devices arena, including single- and multi-use devices and equipment housings.

“As healthcare professionals embrace self-administered care they need devices that not only are effective therapeutically but also offer their patients functionality, convenience, haptics and aesthetics,” Trinseo wrote in prepared remarks. “Polymers are a big part of the challenge and Trinseo, with a foundation in medical polymers, intends to offer the solution.”
