Kilkenny Live reports that Abbott (NYSE:ABT) is seeking permission to expand its facility in Kilkenny, Ireland.

According to the report, Abbott hopes to extend its existing industrial building and alter its vehicle entrance and parking lot at the IDA Business and Technology Park in Kilkenny.

The report states that the proposed extension would result in an increase of 1,375 square meters in gross floor area. It says the company expects to use the extra space to accommodate medical device manufacturing floor space, corridors and service areas. Changes to the vehicle entrance and parking lot would include site clearance works, a new visitor vehicle entrance and new parking spots, the report states.

According to Kilkenny Live, Abbott also seeks permission for further ancillary changes and expects a decision by Feb. 24, 2026.

Abbott officially opened its state-of-the-art manufacturing facility in Kilkenny in November 2024. The site serves as a global manufacturing center of excellence for Abbott’s Diabetes Care business. At the time of its opening, the company said it expected to employ more than 800 people at the plant. Abbott announced its plans for the €440 million investment in Ireland in August 2022, then broke ground on the facility in April 2023.

The 30,000-square-meter Kilkenny facility produces FreeStyle Libre 3 sensors to support Abbott’s continuous glucose monitoring (CGM) portfolio. Powered by six air-to-water heat pumps, the fully electric site features nearly 600 solar panels on the roof. It also has tanks for collecting rainwater to use onsite.

FreeStyle Libre 3 is the company’s latest-generation CGM and has been on the market for years after receiving FDA clearance in May 2022. Libre 3 Plus is Abbott’s version of the sensor that pairs with insulin delivery systems.
