Abbott unveils new Libre app feature for mealtime decisions

Abbott (NYSE:ABT) today unveiled a new feature within its Libre app for continuous glucose monitoring (CGM).

Libre Assist, the new feature, aims to help people with diabetes better understand how the foods they eat affect their glucose levels. Abbott says the app differs from traditional food logging apps that only provide feedback after a meal is logged. This helps people make informed decisions before they eat. Much like with the company’s FreeStyle Libre CGM systems that rival Dexcom’s, the app launch could provide a similar feature to Dexcom’s AI-powered meal logging offering.

Abbott unveiled the technology and kicked off its launch at CES 2026 in Las Vegas.

Libre Assist uses generative AI to predict how a food choice may affect a person’s glucose levels. Then, it provides actionable and personalized meal guidance to support in-the-moment decisions. Post-meal, it uses data from Libre CGMs to confirm the actual impact.

Before eating, users can snap a photo or enter a text description of their food. The feature’s algorithm then identifies the ingredients and predicts the meal’s potential glucose impact. It has a color-coded rating system, using green for minor, yellow for moderate and orange for major impact. The platform also offers practical meal tips to help users lower their potential glucose impact.

After the meal, Libre Assist displays personal glucose data from CGMs to show how meals affect glucose, with personalized feedback helping users understand their bodies’ unique responses to different food items. That allows for informed decisions in the future.

Users can access the Libre Assist feature within the Libre app through the Insights tab on the bottom navigation feature.

“People living with diabetes need more than apps that just log food and fall short of helping them with meal decisions,” said Marc Taub, VP of technical operations for Abbott’s diabetes care business. “That’s why Abbott built Libre Assist – a free, and advanced predictive tool that delivers personalized meal guidance and works with our leading Libre technology to deliver real-time glucose insights. For the first time, people have smart, in-the-moment support right at their fingertips to make a confident choice every time they eat.”
