ICU Medical announced today that its Plum 360 smart infusion system received recognition by healthcare research firm KLAS Research.

KLAS Research named Plum 360 a “top-performing smart pump” in its “EMR-integrated” and “traditional” categories. It marks the sixth straight year Plum 360 received recognition as a “Best in KLAS” technology.

ICU Medical said in a news release that Plum 360 is the first smart pump honored in both categories. The pump received a Best in KLAS award every year it’s been eligible.

The company said the award underscores the alignment of Plum 360 with the latest industry guidelines for interoperable infusion systems. Additionally, ICU Medical said receiving the same award for standalone IV smart pumps “reinforces the importance” of the system’s differentiating features.

ICU Medical’s pole-mounted Plum 360 system helps reduce the risk of medication errors and simplifies infusion setups. It features unique cassette technology for delivering two compatible medications at independent rates through a single line. This allows the delivery of secondary medication without the need to pause the primary one.

KLAS Research President Adam Gale said the award winners “demonstrated exceptional dedication to improving and innovating the industry.”

“While nearly 180 clinical sites are utilizing the Plum 360 as an interoperable device, there are still very significant advantages when used without interoperability,” said Dan Woolson, corporate VP and GM of ICU Medical infusion systems. “Features like secondary drug delivery, air-in-line management, and drug library compliance are important as stand-alone features. In an interoperable environment, they are amplified and further enhance safety by helping health care providers reduce medication errors, improve quality of care, streamline workflows, and maximize revenue capture.”
