Medtronic touts time in range outcomes with MiniMed 780G

Medtronic (NYSE:MDT) today announced a new real-world retrospective analysis highlighting positive outcomes with its MiniMed 780G.

The medtech giant’s Diabetes business, which recently took the next step toward becoming a standalone public company called MiniMed through an IPO, said MiniMed 780G achieved American Diabetes Association (ADA)-recommended goals for time-in-range (TIR), even on days when mealtime boluses were missed.

MiniMed’s Carelink data management platform provides easy access to reports and allows data sharing with providers and care partners. Data from CareLink demonstrated that the studied user population achieved 76.3% TIR on missed bolus days when using SmartGuard technology with recommended optimal settings (100 mg/dL glucose target; two-hour active insulin time). SmartGuard enables users to personalize their glucose goals with an adjustable target setting.

MiniMed 780G’s algorithm adjusts insulin delivery every five minutes, based on sensor readings. It auto-corrects glucose levels to provide support for missed boluses or underestimated carbohydrates.

The study investigated off-label user behavior as the system labeling requires users to announce meals with SmartGuard. Deliberately not bolusing remains unapproved and not recommended. Medtronic said the study highlighted the importance of optimized settings, especially when some users occasionally missed boluses.

In the study, investigators analyzed real-world global CareLink user data. They looked at those using MiniMed 780G insulin pumps with a compatible Medtronic sensor who experienced at least 10 days without bolusing between Jan. 2, 2020, and March 31, 2025.

The analysis found that those using recommended optimal settings achieved significantly better outcomes than those using other settings in all age groups. That included both type 1 and type 2 diabetes populations. TIR came in at 76.3% with recommended optimal settings compared to 69.3% for non-recommended optimal users.

Mean sensor glucose registered at 149 mg/dL, compared to 160 mg/dL. Investigators reported a glucose management indicator of 6.9% compared to 7.1%. More than 61% of recommended optimal setting users met all three of the ADA recommended glycemic targets on missed bolus days, compared to 36.6% in users of other settings

Using real-world CareLink data, this analysis showed that when using recommended optimal settings, 71.2% of MiniMed 780G system users studies achieved ADA-recommended TIR goals on days when meal boluses were missed.”
