The MiniMed Flex system is MiniMed’s smallest and only app-controlled insulin pump. According to the company, Instinct is the world’s smallest sensor and offers up to 15 days of wear.
Powered by SmartGuard technology, MiniMed Flex automatically adjusts insulin delivery, and the Meal Detection technology can help compensate when a bolus is occasionally missed or carbohydrates are underestimated, the company said in a press release. The system holds up to 300 units of insulin and works with the Extended infusion set, which can be worn for up to seven days.
Real-world data from the MiniMed 780G system, which uses the same SmartGuard algorithm, has shown users with recommended settings achieve 80% Time in Range, a measurement of the percentage of time a person’s blood glucose stays within a target range, including more than 90% overnight, MiniMed said.
“People with diabetes deserve technology that works hard without asking much in return,” CEO Que Dallara said in a press release. “That’s what we’re delivering with MiniMed Flex. The pump can stay tucked away, the algorithm is working around the clock, and now with Instinct, users can go up to 15 days between sensor changes. This is another step toward the hands-free future that MiniMed is building, where diabetes technology does more so people can think about it less.”
“Diabetes is always with me, but I don’t want managing it to be the thing I’m thinking about all day,” Monique La Bomme, who lives with diabetes and uses the MiniMed Flex system with the Instinct sensor, said in a press release. “With MiniMed Flex, I can clip it and forget it, use the app when I need to interact with it, and go longer between sensor changes. It all adds up to spending less time thinking about my diabetes and more time enjoying life.”
The Flex system is FDA cleared for people with type 1 diabetes ages 7 years and older and adults ages 18 years and older with insulin-requiring type 2 diabetes.
The Flex system launched in the U.S. earlier this year following its FDA clearance in March. The system first launched with the Simplera Sync sensor. The system was made available through Medicare last month.
The MiniMed 780G delivery system integrated with Instinct and the MiniMed Go system paired with the Instinct Go sensor both launched in Europe earlier this summer. MiniMed 780G is an automated insulin delivery system while MiniMed Go is a connected smart multiple daily injection (MDI) system. Both systems are also available in the U.S.
MiniMed has an existing partnership with Abbott through a collaboration that began in 2024 to pair Abbott sensors with Medtronic insulin delivery systems. With the partnership, the companies announced plans to integrate Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre continuous glucose monitors with Medtronic’s MiniMed 780G and InPen system.
Abbott’s dual glucose-ketone sensors were also integrated with MiniMed smart dosing systems earlier this summer.
Tandem Diabetes Care also launched its new insulin pump with an Abbott sensor, the FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus.
