West Pharmaceutical Services (NYSE:WST) announced that it completed the sale of its SmartDose on-body delivery system to AbbVie.

Exton, Pennsylvania-based West sold and transferred its manufacturing and supply rights for the SmartDose 3.5mL on-body delivery system and associated facilities to AbbVie. The companies closed their transaction, as planned, on July 1, 2026. West will continue to develop and manufacture all other versions of SmartDose, including the 10mL system. This offers adaptive technology for larger volumes.

West and AbbVie announced an agreement for the technology in January. At the time, West said the deal includes a total consideration of $112.5 million at close.

The company said in January that it expected the system’s sales to make up 4% of revenues in fiscal 2025.

West’s SmartDose on-body delivery system features a wearable, on-body injector with a separate, pre-fillable, polymer-based cartridge. A drug product fills the cartridge, enabling the user to utilize a patient-centric approach to self-administration.

At the time of the agreement to sell the technology, West President, CEO and Chair Eric M. Green said:

“West pioneered the innovation of the on-body delivery device technology for complex injectable medicines, which has improved the lives of people around the world. As part of our portfolio review, we have determined it is best to transition the SmartDose 3.5mL product to AbbVie. This decision aligns with our ongoing commitment to our customer development pipeline and patient-centric approach for large dose on-body delivery devices to drive durable and profitable growth.”
