Insulet makes Omnipod 5 available with Dexcom G7 15 Day CGM

Insulet (Nasdaq:PODD) today announced immediate compatibility between its Omnipod 5 system and the Dexcom (Nasdaq:DXCM) G7 15 Day CGM.

Acton, Massachusetts-based Insulet, which has paired its pumps with previous versions of Dexcom continuous glucose monitors (CGMs), has offered Omnipod 5 with the initial version of G7 since early 2024. However, Dexcom received FDA clearance for people over the age of 18 years old in the U.S. in April for the 15-day version of its latest-generation sensor.

Last month, the company announced its plans for a December launch for G7 15 Day. At launch, the company said its newest CGM pairs with the iLet Bionic Pancreas from Beta Bionics in addition to Omnipod 5. Dexcom has work underway with Tandem Diabetes Care to finalize integration for G7 15 Day with its pumps as well.

“Today brings a significant update for individuals managing diabetes with Omnipod 5 and Dexcom,” Insulet posted on LinkedIn. “Omnipod 5 is immediately compatible with the Dexcom G7 15 Day CGM system for adults (18+), which launches today in the U.S.”

G7 15 Day, Dexcom’s latest-generation CGM, the longest-lasting wearable CGM, according to the company. The offering delivers several features of the existing G7 platform. That includes a waterproof sensor, connectivity to the Apple Watch, plus automated activity, simplified meal and new medication logging. Its 12-hour grace period allows a seamless transition when replacing sensors as well.

New features include the longer wear, reaching up to 15.5 days, plus a mean absolute relative difference (MARD, a measure of CGM accuracy) of 8%. It also offers easier glucose management with fewer monthly sensor changes and reduced waste.

Omnipod 5 is the first FDA-cleared tubeless automated insulin delivery system available on the market. It communicates with a CGM to proactively correct for glucose highs every five minutes and protect against lows with insulin dosing.

Insulet plans continue enhancing the system, including rolling out a lower target and extending Omnipod 5’s automation to enhance time in range and usability. By the first half of next year, the company expects the current-generation pump to connect with “all of the major CGMs,” including Abbott’s FreeStyle Libre 3 Plus, CEO Ashley McEvoy said during the company’s recent Investor Day event.
