Medtrum introduces 300-unit tubeless insulin pump

Medtrum today unveiled the 300-unit version of its TouchCare Nano tubeless automated insulin delivery patch pump.

The China-based company took to LinkedIn to announce the advancement:

“Tired of your pump running on empty?” the company wrote. “A significant proportion of insulin pump users have TDD requirements, whether due to insulin resistance, body weight, lifestyle, or clinical variability. It’s a reality for many, yet standard patch pumps often force a compromise. We heard you. And we changed the rules.

“Introducing the 300U version of the TouchCare® Nano Pump. It’s the world’s first and only 300U tubeless insulin pump…”

Medtrum says the pump delivers fewer reservoir changes and longer wear times with fewer interruptions. It has no tubes, meaning less hassle, and up to three days of steady, reliable delivery.

TouchCare Nano, Medtrum’s hybrid closed-loop automated insulin delivery system, allows for 24/7 therapy delivery. Users can auto-adjust basal delivery and auto-deliver corrections for high glucose. The system’s built-in auto meal handling feature also frees users from daily carb counting, the company’s website says.

Users can operate the pump from their smartphone without the need for a separate personal diabetes manager, while the system integrates with Medtrum’s own continuous glucose monitor (CGM) to enable automated delivery. Additionally, users can customize their glucose targets to increase their time in range.

Current patch pump market leader Insulet — with whom Medtrum has battled in patent spats — offers its latest-generation Omnipod 5 pump holds 200 units of insulin. Medtronic Diabetes (soon to be MiniMed) says the MiniMed Fit patch pump it currently has under development would also hold 300 units.

The patch pump market looks set to expand, with potential competitors, like Beta Bionics and Tandem Diabetes Care, are developing their own patch pumps. PharmaSens and SiBionics also recently unveiled their own entry, an all-in-one device, too.
